Irish Travellers set up camp at John Smith's Stadium - Yorkshire

From the Huddersfield Daily Examiner

Nine caravans and about 15 vehicles moved onto St Andrew's Road car park at about 7.30pm last night.

The illegal camp comes just a few days before thousands of fans are expected to arrive for Huddersfield Town's home fixture against Wigan.

But the Travellers, who are thought to come from southern Ireland, have vowed they will move on by Thursday.

Philip Armitage, operations manager of KSDL, said they had spoken to the Travellers and received assurances they would leave.

He said: "It's causing us a few logistical problems because we do have companies that use our car park so we've had to move a few things around.

"They came on site before we managed to lock it up as we have to leave the gate open until the driving range closes.

"I will be speaking to our legal people to get papers ready should they not move on and in the short term we are thinking about installing barriers."

It is the third time in recent memory that Travellers have parked up on the stadium's property.

In May a group of Travellers moved onto the same car park - just days before Town's last game of the season against Barnsley.

There were fears that the camp may disrupt parking for the game, but the Travellers moved off the evening before the big match, which ensured Town's Championship survival.
