Poole and Piddlehinton Gypsy and Traveller sites plans submitted - Dorset

Plans for a camp at Piddlehinton and a site in Oakdale, Poole have gone online.

Poole councillors voted for the four-pitch Oakdale site in January, while the 25-pitch Piddlehinton site was chosen by Dorset Council in November.

Piddle Valley ward councillor Jacqui Cuff said she was worried the Piddlehinton site would bring increases in fly-tipping and "anonymous horses".

She added that the site, near Piddlehinton Enterprise Park, could also discourage new businesses.

The Piddlehinton camp was used as a temporary site to reduce unauthorised encampments during the 2012 Olympics.

Permanent sites plan

There are currently three permanent Traveller sites in Dorset - at Wareham, Blandford and Piddlehinton - and a fourth is being built in Shaftesbury

About 30 sites were put out to public consultation in 2011 and all were rejected by the local authorities
The county council has said a development plan for the sites may not be completed until 2017

If approved, it will be authorised for use for three years between March and August - from this year until 2017.

Plans for the site at Oakdale, on land off Broadstone Way, have been submitted by Borough of Poole Council. If approved, it would be authorised for use between Easter and 15 September each year - starting on 18 April this year.

Earlier this month, proposals for another temporary site at Marshes End in Creekmoor, Poole, were also submitted.

Borough of Poole Council said the Oakdale and Creekmoor sites would be a way of meeting the needs of both residents and Travellers as "a number of unauthorised encampments each year" caused "public concern".

The three temporary Gypsy and Traveller sites are being created while a plan for further permanent sites is put together by the county's nine councils.
