Mountain of fly-tipped waste left in Shirley - London

From the Croydon Advertiser

TRAVELLERS have been blamed for an almighty mess near a tram stop in Shirley.

Mounds of fly-tipped rubbish were left on Sunken Road, next to Coombe Road tram stop, last weekend.

Croydon Council had moved a group of Travellers off the site at the end of last week. Council contractors were at the site on Monday and Tuesday to remove the rubbish.

A nearby resident, Richard Cheetham, reported the mess to the council.

Mr Cheetham blamed the poor security gates to Sunken Road, which serves as a path between the tram stop and Shirley Hills Road.

He said: "The security is totally inadequate and they have made a horrendous mess that needs to be cleaned up at taxpayers' expense.

"This could have been avoided, if the security was more than just a padlock that can be cut off with bolt cutters, and this needs to change so this cannot happen again.

"This is the worst tipping I have ever seen in seven years of living in the area."

A council spokesman said the security would be looked at, with the possibility of putting in a much bigger structure with safer locks.

The spokesman also said that, although there is no CCTV along the road, the streetlights appeared to have been knocked out anyway – making it hard for the CCTV to serve any purpose.

The council is currently investigating the possibility of prosecutions from receipts with names and addresses found in the rubbish, but the spokesman also added that it was unlikely these belonged to the fly-tippers.
