Travellers' caravans in Springwood Car Park as Kirklees Council began eviction moves - Yorkshire

From the Huddersfield Daily Examiner

These Travellers have occupied a town-centre car park in Huddersfield.

Now Kirklees Council officials are starting legal action to get them evicted.

They are believed to be part of the group of Travellers who occupied other sites in Huddersfield last week.

The caravans and vans had parked up on the St Andrews Road car park at the John Smith’s Stadium but moved after two days.

They then went to the Leeds Road retail park before again moving off.

The Travellers returned to the car park outside the former Comet store on the retail park on Monday afternoon but moved during the night to Springwood.

They have occupied part of the car park opposite the building site for the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre.

A council spokesman said: “The Travellers have moved on to the Springwood car park

“Council officers have now started legal proceedings to take possession of the site”.

It is believed the legal moves will mean a hearing at Huddersfield County Court possibly later this week.

Large parts of the car park are now out of action.

Councillors have long debated the problems of dealing with Travellers.

Kirklees Council has spent many thousands of pounds in cleaning up sites after Travellers have moved on.

They have also spent cash on building metal barriers and locked gates to protect recreation grounds and other sites in the district from being occupied
