Travellers invade proposed Lidl site in Hamsey Green - London

From the Croyden Advertiser

TRAVELLERS have set up camp on the site of a planned Lidl store in Hamsey Green.

The 30 caravan group was evicted from Merstham, Surrey, this morning after work by local councillors and police.

But shortly before 11am this morning Croydon councillor Tim Pollard confirmed the group has set up residence in Hamsey Green on the old site of the Good Companions pub at the junction of Tithe Pit Shaw Lane and Limpsfield Road.

He posted a statement on the Croydon Conservatives website which read: "Nearby residents have reported that we have an illegal encampment of Travellers in Hamsey Green, on the site which was formerly the Good Companions.

"This is privately owned land - it was acquired a couple of years ago by Lidl, following which they demolished the pub which had been there and created a nice level site with lots of space, which has now tempted the Travellers in.

"As it is private land, the council has no powers to evict, so I have asked officers to liaise with Lidl to ensure that they are aware and are (hopefully) rapidly acting on it."

He later confirmed Lidl is working to evict the Travellers.
