Travellers move in on council-owned Wolverhampton car park - West Midlands

From the Express and Star

Around a dozen caravans have pulled on to the site off Showell Road in Bushbury over the weekend.

The car park is used as a park-and-ride facility for shoppers and provides matchday parking for Wolves home games.

The vehicles include a mix of trailers and older model BMWs and Mercedes Benz cars.

Mark Antill, manager of the Strykers bowling alley on nearby Shaw Road, said: “I think they moved on, on Saturday afternoon.

“There’s around 30 vehicles. We’ve never had anything like that while I’ve been here.

“Our customers haven’t really mentioned it to us, and it’s not on our property.

“We will have to mention it to our head office though. I don’t believe they have left any rubbish on the site. They haven’t really caused any problems since they arrived and they haven’t been into the centre.”

A number of the vehicles feature foreign registration plates, with some thought to originate from France. Council officers have visited the car park today to ‘assess the situation’.

Paul Brown, spokesman for Wolverhampton City Council, said: “Once they have completed their assessment, they will decide what course of action is required.”

The site has previously been targeted by nuisance motorcyclists who have used it to practice stunts.

Extra signage had to be put up to warn bike riders.

It comes as council chiefs draw up plans for refurbishment work at a dedicated Travellers’ site nearby in Showell Road.

The scheme is set to go before a meeting of Wolverhampton City Council later this week.
