A family of New Age Travellers who have made woods near Hempnall their home for ten years are applying for permission to retain two caravans and develop four pitches to station up to eight more caravans.
A planning application has been lodged with South Norfolk Council.
A report says New Age Travellers have become a rare breed.
Applicant John Hollis is also a woodsman, a profession at least one of his children aspires to follow.
They are integrated into the local community and enjoy the same rights as other Travellers.
They pursue an alternative lifestyle and are committed to environmental sustainability.
A large number of forestry workers come from the New Age community and they are known for their love of trees.
The application is also for a charcoal burner which needs to be on site.
Spring Wood sells about £6,000 of charcoal a year.
The Spring Wood site is described as a forest enterprise and the occupiers have sought to develop an alternative lifestyle to support themselves and their family.
The report to the council says the applicants have accomplished something very unusual.
