Councillors agree to delay decision over Aikey Brae Traveller site - Aberdeenshire

From STV News

Councillors have delayed making a decision over plans to create an official stopover site for Travellers.

The council’s Policy and Resource’s committee has decided it will consider some different options before coming to a conclusion on the future of Aikey Brae, near Old Deer.

The council has previously agreed in principle to the creation of a Traveller’s stopover at the site.

It would offer members of the travelling community a 14-pitch site, with a water pipe, portable toilets and refuse facilities. The proposals have been met with opposition.

A judgment on the matter was due to be made by the committee, but a decision has not yet been made.

A council spokeswoman said there had been a submission from the community council.

She said: “The proposal for a Gypsy/Traveller stopover site at Aikey Brae, Old Deer was considered by the Policy and Resources Committee.

“Given the level of public interest and a representation from the Community Council this week, it was agreed to further consider the options at Aikey Brae. Further reports will be considered at a future meeting.”
