Dumbarton police step up patrols after Travellers site trouble - West Dunbartonshire

From the Dumbarton Reporter

Over the past week the number of caravans settling on the land outside Dumbarton Football Club’s stadium has increased, with a local community councillors urging the club to take new security measures.

James Cormack, convenor of Dumbarton East and Central Community Council told the Reporter on Friday he believes there had now been threats made and damage done to property.

DAMAGE

The Dumbarton FC season ticket holder added: “Some of those employed by the club, as far as I know, have been threatened. The club is going to have to keep its eyes open.

“The Travellers have managed to get into the grounds. I know it will cost a bit but they should be employing someone to man the gate to make sure none of them are coming in.

“There is going to be more damage to property and that’s going to cost them money anyway, so they’re better taking steps now.”

A spokesman for Dumbarton Football Club said it cannot make any public comment at present in accordance with a procedure agreed following discussions with the police and the council.

MEASURES

The Reporter understands the Travellers were previously given notice to leave the site, but have yet to do so.

Inspector Coleen Wylie, of Dumbarton Police Office, said officers are aware of the situation at Dumbarton Football Club’s ground.

She added: “We are currently investigating two reports of vandalism, as a result of the vandalisms, additional patrols will be in the area to offer reassurance.”

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said: “The land is not owned by the council and it is the responsibility of the land owners to evict the Travellers from the site.”
