New Traveller site in Walthamstow Stadium car park in Chingford - Essex

From the Epping Forest Guardian

A new Traveller site has popped up overnight in the grounds of the old Walthamstow dog track.

About 14 caravans have appeared in the car park which will eventually house a new bus depot.

Gail Penfold, Chairwoman of the Walthamstow Stadium Area Resident’s Association, has been down to the site today.

She said: “I have already had a polite conversation with a few of the Travellers and will be meeting with the head of the family this evening.

“As they are not local it is important that they are aware of local issues. “It must be remembered that not all Travellers are thieves.

“As chair of the association I have an obligation to welcome all newcomers to our area.

“It is hoped that for the period of their stay that they will respect the historical buildings and land and the amenities we have in our area.”

A council spokesman said: "We were informed a very short time ago that there are Travellers on the old car park opposite the dog track.

“The owners are apparently aware and dealing with the issue.

“They appear to have arrived overnight and we are sending someone down today to assess any health and welfare concerns.”
