Burnley Travellers move a few streets away - Lancashire

A GROUP of Travellers have moved off a children's play area – but have now set up camp on land just a few streets away.

Several caravans and vehicles arrived on fields off Harwold Avenue on the Stoops Estate in Burnley last Wednesday night.

Residents claimed they were threatened and that the Traveller children who took over the park were charging local children £5 to use the play equipment.At the weekend, the Travellers moved on to spare land off nearby Venice Avenue, leaving several bags of rubbish behind.

Resident Karen Fisk said: “They drive across the grass, and leave rubbish behind. They make a right mess. Why should we have to put up with them?” Burnley council said that it had served the Travellers with an eviction notice, ordering them to move on from Harold Avenue within two weeks. The council also provided the Travellers with bin bags to clean up after themselves, and several bags of rubbish were left at the site after they departed .

Ward councillors said that they were aware that the Travellers had moved on, and that steps would be taken as soon as possible to move them again from their new pitch. Coun Bea Foster said: “I’ve just been down there to see what the situation was and I’m told they moved on at the weekend.

“I’m going to send off an email to the council and see what the situation is. I believe it normally takes 10 to 14 days, but they will moved on.

“Due processes have to be followed, but they will definitely be moved on again. ”
