Unique social work team for Travellers under threat - London

From communitycare.co.uk

Haringey Council is considering cutting funding for its specialist social work team for Irish Travellers, Gypsies and Roma Gypsies, according to local newspaper The Haringey Independent - and there are concerns the service will be cut altogether. This is sad news given the team of two social workers seems to be so highly valued by the travelling community (there is already a petition to save the team).

An estimated 2,500 Travellers live in Haringey and this unique little team helps them get access to services such as health and education. They also make sure the local authority's policies and practices include the needs of Travellers. The council is, understandably in these times, trying to ensure that every service delivers value for money, but I hope this much-needed service is allowed to continue. The consultation period has been extended; I'll try and bring you an update once a decision has been made.
