Travellers' camp is evicted from Plymouth Gypsy site - Devon

From the Plymouth Herald

A CAVALCADE of caravans was towed from a city Travellers site as an illegal encampment was evicted by the council.

Police also attended permanent Gypsy and Travellers site The Ride yesterday afternoon, where several caravans had set up without permission.

One tenant at The Ride, who did not wish to be named, said the group was known to residents and had caused "no trouble" since arriving.

But he added: "They knew they had to go and they made no fuss about it."

A Plymouth City Council spokeswoman said: "The permanent residents of the site rent their pitches from the council and pay council tax in the same way as other tenants of social housing.

"We followed our agreed procedure for managing unauthorised encampments which in this case has resulted in eviction."
