Town prepares for the arrival of the horse fair - Gloucestershire

From the Gloucestershire Echo

THOUSANDS of Gypsies are set to gather for Stow Horse Fair tomorrow – despite forecasts of torrential rain.

Traditionally, May's event is the bigger of the twice-yearly fairs. But, by yesterday afternoon, only 50 caravans had rolled in to the Maugersbury Road gypsy-owned field.

Stow and Maugersbury Action Group is still pushing to reduce the length of time the gypsies are on the field for the official one-day event. Travellers move in days before despite a High Court injunction banning overnight camping.

Former Stow Mayor Vera Norwood, recently elected as president of the national Gypsy Council for Education, Culture, Welfare and Civil Rights, said she hoped it would be a harmonious and peaceful fair enjoyed by everyone.
