Crucial meeting for Meriden protestors

From the Birmingham Mail

RESIDENTS who were defeated in their bid to continue monitoring the activities of travellers, who moved onto greenbelt land in the Midlands countryside, will learn when they will be evicted.

Solihull Borough Council will give a decision on the group called Residents Against Inappropriate Development (RAID) during a planning meeting on May 23.

The group set up their counter-camp on Eaves Green Lane, Meriden, two years ago after the Travellers, led by Noah Burton, moved in.

The group were told they had to leave at the end of last month but the council said they were willing to explore other options with them and they were staying put in the meantime.

RAID chairman David McGrath, said they were hoping to hold discussions with officers over the next few days.

He said: “Officers will then make a recommendation to the planing committee on May 23.

“We want to stay to continue monitor and report illegal activity at the site.

“The council should give us the same terms as they have given the Travellers, no more, no less.”

Last week, the Travellers who were given until next March to leave their illegal site, lodged a fresh appeal against being denied planning permission.
