Thousands take part in major consultation exercise over potential second site for Gypsy Travellers in Swansea -

From the South Wales Evening Post

THOUSANDS of people have taken part in a major consultation exercise over a potential second site for Gypsy Travellers in Swansea.

More than 3,000 people submitted responses to Swansea Council which launched the three month long consultation in December last year.

Swansea is already home to one site for Gypsy Travellers at Pantyblwyd but this is oversubscribed and the local authority has considered potential sites to cope with demand.

Swansea Council has now closed the consultation which operated via a dedicated website, exhibitions at the civic centre and libraries across the authority.

A member-led task and finish group has previously looked at all council-owned land in the city against set criteria.

The work resulted in a number of sites being short-listed from more than 1,000 for potential use.

June Burtonshaw, Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Place, said: "We have had an excellent response from residents.

"The task of finding a new site is one that residents obviously feel strongly about and this has been reflected in the number of responses.

"All the information received will be taken into consideration as part of the next step in the process."

A report will be produced highlighting points raised by residents to provide a better gauge of public opinion on the issue.

Sites chosen would then require planning permission.

Swansea Council's cabinet will decide on which sites are put forward for planning.

A public meeting was held at Waunarlwydd Rugby Club on Tuesday night to discuss a former Greyhound track at Fforestfach which is one of the potential locations to host the second Gypsy Traveller site in Swansea.

A spokesman for the meeting said: "The meeting was a well organised and an efficient exchange of information and many updates took place.

"There is discussion about forming a business/residents association, Businesses And Residents Against Improper Development."
