From the Buckinghamshire Examiner
PEOPLE are being urged to comment on a suggestion to turn part of an industrial estate into Traveller site.
Chiltern District Council has been instructed by the government’s planning inspector to consult on a number of suggested planning policies as part of its Delivery Development Plan Document, which follows the Core Strategy, adopted in November 2011.
As part of the document the council must review some of the district’s employment sites as well as identity Gypsy, Traveller or travelling showpeople’s sites where it can.
In the document the planning inspector has highlighted Springfield Road Industrial Estate, in Chesham, as a proposed mixed employment and housing development with the potential for a Gypsy, Traveller or travelling showpeople’s site to be considered as part of the overall development, possibly located within the Green Belt part of the site.
However, people in the area believe the site is unsuitable for Gypsies and Travellers because of limited access to it as well as it being a narrow one-way road with speed bumps.
People are being urged to respond to the consultation as well as give feedback on what they would like to see the site become, such as a commercial site, housing or a mixture of both.
District Councillor for the area Nik Stewert said: “Clearly it’d be a ridiculous choice for a Gypsy or Traveller site. I’m supportive of the additional places required for Gypsies and Travellers in the right place, which isn’t the top of a hill.
“We need as many people as possible to write to the council and make it clear that they think it’s ridiculous.”
People have until June 7 to take part in the consultation.
