Chilton: Travellers move back on to wartime airfield - Suffolk

TRAVELLERS have again moved on to a former Second World War airfield near Sudbury.

The group, who arrived in Chilton some time over the weekend, will be visited by members of Suffolk’s Gypsy and Traveller liaison team in the coming days.

It is just over six months since Travellers were ordered off the same site.

In September last year free mobile toilets were installed for the encampment while procedures were put in place to move the Travellers on.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said it were trying to establish if the group were on part of the airfield belonging to the council or if it was private land. He said a liaison team would be visiting the site to perform necessary welfare checks.

In February the EADT reported that housing officers feared a lack of suitable Gypsy and Traveller pitches could lead to an increased number of unauthorised encampments in in the Babergh area.

A report considered by Babergh District Council’s strategy committee said there was a “significant” chance the shortage of permanent pitches – and complete lack of transit pitches – for Travellers in the area could have a “critical” impact.
