Rethink on Travellers’ site is urged - Yorkshire

From the Yorkshire Post

Campaigners fighting the creation of a second Travellers’ site in a small village have written to councillors outlining their concerns.

Opponents are concerned that the number of pitches for Travellers’ could be expanded on the airfield at Burn, near Selby.

Selby District Council is proposing a second site is created at the airfield but campaigners believe that a site should be found at another location in a different part of the district.

In a letter campaigners warn: “We are writing to all members of the Selby District Planning committee concerning the expansion of the Traveller site in Burn.

“The settled residents of Burn do not want it. Several well attended public meetings, a petition and dozens and dozens of letters to Selby District Council, our MP, the Department of Communities and Local Government and newspapers attest to that,” the letter, from a number of organisations, adds.

The council has said that national planning guidance means councils must identify land for a five year supply of Gypsy and Traveller pitches and it has said: “Delivering the legal obligation to provide new pitches is a requirement we must meet.”
