A GROUP of Travellers have been ordered to leave a Suffolk caravan park after moving on site and refusing to pay.
Police have issued a Section 61 notice to the Travellers, who moved onto Cliff House Caravan Park in Dunwich on Wednesday, following evidence of threatening and abusive behaviour towards the owner.
Although trespassing on land alone is not a criminal offence, the notice gives police a discretionary power to direct trespassers to leave in certain circumstances.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said: “Police have a general duty to preserve the peace and prevent offences to the person and property and, on this occasion, there was evidence of threatening and abusive behaviour to the landlord or his agents, and there were more than six vehicles occupying the land - meeting the criteria for Section 61.”
Officers had been monitoring the situation since the Travellers moved onto the site in Minsmere Road on Wednesday, and issued the direction to leave yesterday afternoon. The Travellers have until 8am on Monday morning to vacate the site.
