Tributes to campaigners as Meriden Gypsy camp battle draws to a close - West Midlands

From the Birmingham Mail

Each will be represented by a single white rose, together with their photographs.

Mr McGrath said: “We will be holding a minute’s silence to remember all those campaigners who have sat by the brazier, who have attended the protest meetings and gave evidence at the public inquiry but who have passed away and never saw the fruits of their labours and inspirational contribution.

“Their legacy goes beyond the battle of Eaves Green Lane.”

Mr McGrath also said locals also aimed to set up a garden of remembrance in the future to honour the four.

RAID will be on day 1,086 of their protest on Sunday and intend to dismantle their own makeshift camp on a nearby builder’s yard, following Monday’s ceremony.

Mr McGrath added: “We will definitely go on Monday because the council and courts said they will prosecute residents and Travellers if we don’t leave.”

Yesterday, one caravan, a box trailer and a handful of Travellers remained at the site.

After Sunday, the Gypsies have another month in which to reinstate the land back to its greenbelt status.

Meanwhile, landowner and Gypsy spokesman Noah Burton has put the plot of land where the Travellers have been camped up for three years for sale. He is inviting offers until May 30.

Mr McGrath said residents may consider buying the parcel of land - but would not want to pay a ‘king’s ransom’ for it.
