Police crack down on Travellers’ horses - Yorkshire

POLICE are to clamp down on Travellers who let their horses and ponies stray on to public roads.

The move was welcomed at the meeting of the Malton Rural West community and police group in Sheriff Hutton when representatives of parish councils said they were concerned about the danger the animals could cause to motorists, as well as themselves.

The meeting heard that the police are also carrying out checks on horse passports.

Other items discussed at the meeting included:

• A number of village representatives have complained about speeding traffic, but some parish councils are working together to operate a speed- activitated sign being introduced by North Yorkshire County Council.

• The secretary of the group, Eric Smith, said concerns had been expressed about the theft of diesel, scrap metal and farm machinery in the area.

• The next meeting of the group is on Tuesday, July 30, at Appleton-le-Street.
