Long-running Waltham St Lawrence Travellers sage continues - Berkshire

From the Royal Borough Observer

THE long-running saga over an illegal Travellers' site rumbles on.

A 28-day notice period served on the owners and occupants of the unauthorised Five Oaks Farm site, in Shurlock Road, Waltham St Lawrence, to leave or face direct action to remove them expired on Tuesday, March 19, but the site remains occupied.

The Royal Borough's cabinet prioritisation sub committee will meet on Wednesday (10/4) to review the latest information about the site.

The sub committee will receive updates on the circumstances of the occupants of the site and the legal steps being taken before deciding if direct action to clear the land should be taken.

If this course is taken, 48 hours notice will be given to the owners and occupants before direct action work begins.

The Royal Borough is continuing to negotiate with the occupants to encourage them to leave voluntarily, but is also liaising with the police and bailiffs if direct action is necessary.

A total of £300,000 has been set aside for the clearing of the site.

The site has been occupied by Travellers' since December 2009.
