Felixstowe: Concern at Travellers camping in car park - Suffolk

From the Ipswich Star

CONCERNS have been raised about securing a seafront car park after Travellers set up camp there.

Two large caravans and a collection of vehicles have parked up in the council-owned Landguard car park at the end of Manor Terrace.

People in the area say they are concerned – especially at the council’s lack of action in securing the car park following two encampments last summer.

One resident said: “It’s only a couple of caravans this time and let’s hope no more turn up. They always leave mess behind and it just makes everyone uneasy about using the car park.

“The council was supposed to be taking action but nothing has happened.”

A Suffolk Coastal spokesman said: “The two caravans appear to be linked to the traditional fairground use and have moved onto this site because the south seafront development is under way.

“We are investigating what can be done to find a more suitable site for these Travellers if they are linked to the Showman’s Guild and their visits are likely to remain annual events.”

The council has said action would be taken to make the car parks more secure and prevent the camps taking place – and “certain sites have been identified for barriers”.

Car parks previously had height barriers at their entrances but these were removed because they prevented larger, legitimate vehicles – including the council’s own dustcarts – from entering the sites.
