Councillors vow to continue fight against an “unsuitable” Gypsy and Traveller site - Bedfordshire

From Biggleswade Today

Councillors have vowed to continue their fight against an “unsuitable” Gypsy and Traveller site.

Potton town councillors are keen to fight the inclusion of Site 58 in Central Beds Council’s Gypsy and Traveller Local Plan.

The site is on land east of Potton Road and south of Ram Farm, which is also next to the Cambridgeshire Hamlet of Gamlingay Heath.

The vast majority of Potton residents, both the settled population and people living at the existing Gypsy and Traveller Site off Common Road, are against this new site.

At a meeting of Potton Town Council on Tuesday councillors discussed whether to continue funding DLP planning consultants, who are helping them make a case against the site. They decided to continue paying and to ask neighbouring councils to contribute as well.

Following Central Beds Council’s written response to DLP’s initial concerns ,councillors felt their view is not being registered. Councillor Ian Clements said: “The council is not listening to anybody. Whatever is said they are just driving forward.”

Following a suggestion from a member of the public at the meeting they decided to put in an official complaint.

Central Beds Councillor Doreen Gurney, supporting the town councillors, said: “Believe me we are not leaving any stone unturned because we know it’s the wrong place to put another site.”

Councillor Peter Langridge also emphasised that the council is strongly against expanding the current site.
