Green Party councillors have weighed in on the debate on £1 million plans to expand the Cottingley Springs Travellers site
The proposals, which have been referred to the Secretary of State for planning, could see the site increase from 41 to 53 pitches, anciliary buildings, parking and landscaping built.

The Secretary of State now has the option to call in the application and put it in front of a planning inspector, who could arrange a public inquiry where local residents would be given an opportunity to voice their concerns.
In their latest newsletter to local residents, Farnley and Wortley ward Green Party councillors Ann and David Blackburn say the plans are ‘controversial and sensitive’ and ‘contrary to development plan policy’. They add:
“The site is also in the green belt and has a history of flooding. It would appear to any reasonable person that the council is trying to create a Travellers ghetto on Gelderd Road, on the borders of Farnley and Wortley Ward and Morley North Ward.”
Travellers on site and welfare groups appear split on the council’s Traveller policy.
