Travellers camp in Bexley Village - London

From the News Shopper

TRAVELLERS who set up camp in a Bexley Village car park have this afternoon been forced out.

Police received reports up to six caravans had arrived in Thanet Road car park behind Freemantle Hall and the King’s Head pub at around 5pm yesterday.

It is believed the Travellers had put up washing lines between posts and were hanging out their washing.

An eyewitness from Belvedere, who did not wish to be named, told News Shopper this morning: "They were not ramshackle caravans, they were very nice looking. I think they were Elvis caravans.

"There was lots of washing up, mostly children's, and everything was wet.

"I was away shopping for 45 minutes and I thought perhaps someone from the council will be there but there was nobody around when I got back.

"There were no Travellers around either."

At noon today police served an eviction notice under s61 of the Criminal Justice Public Order Act on behalf of Bexley Council which runs the car park.

James Brokenshire, MP for Bexley and Old Sidcup, tweeted: “Have been advised by the Police that the Travellers in #Bexley Village have been moved on. Council contractors are clearing up the site.”
