A council is taking legal action to dispel Travellers who set up camp at Wormwood Scrubs over the weekend.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has is seeking an urgent injunction against the large group who entered the designated Local Nature Reserve on Saturday (Nov 30).

Around 12 caravans have set up on the Redgra area, formerly used for military training, near Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre on the Scrubs Lane side of the 190-acre parkland.

As the sole trustee of the Wormwood Scrubs Charitable Trust, the council manages and maintains the land on behalf of the public.

Deputy leader Greg Smith said: “The council does not tolerate Travellers pitching up and causing trouble in any part of our borough.

“We will not stop until they have been removed from Wormwood Scrubs. Our lawyers are currently working up an injunction, which will be served as soon as possible, to force the removal of them from the Scrubs.”

Council park teams, assisted by police officers, are currently present on the Scrubs to monitor the situation.

The council’s maintenance team are repairing the second entry point to the Redgra to make the area secure.

A reader, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Chronicle: “There is at the moment 12 caravans. They have removed fencing from Scrubs Lane to enter and exit, but originally gained access via the Woodmans Mews entry point on Saturday afternoon.”

It comes after 15 caravans created an illegal camp in the car park of a private sports ground in Harrow last week after being moved on from Ruislip Lido.

An established Irish Traveller community has been based at the end of Stable Way beneath the Westway A40 flyover in North Kensington for many years.
