Survey to identify sites for Travellers - Yorkshire

From the Yorkshire Evening Post

Council chiefs in York are considering suitable sites that can be used by Travellers as part of a planning blueprint that is being put together.

York Council has to allocate
land suitable for use by people from the Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and Showpeople communities, ahead of public talks on the
next stage of York’s Local Plan which will shape future
development in the city and an updated study is now underway to address needs and identify sites.

The external study will help identify which sites in the city are suitable.

Coun Dave Merrett, the council’s cabinet member for transport, planning and sustainability said: “We want to work positively with all York communities to address the location of all new proposed sites.”

The authority is now speaking to parish councils, neighbouring authorities and others about what issues should be taken into account when deciding sites.

The draft Local Plan, sets out future development in York up to 2030 and beyond and proposes 22,000 homes are built, including on areas in the green belt. It has so far provoked the biggest ever response to a public consultation in the city, with 14,000 people making their views known.

Concerns include the sheer scale of the development proposed, however, the Local Plan is seen as crucial to address a lack of affordable homes across York.

The Local Plan is expected to published for further consultation in spring next year.
