DORCHESTER: Plans to create permanent Gypsy site - Dorset

From View From Online

The Piddle Valley temporary Gypsy site brought into use for the Olympics could soon be back in operation again.

Dorset County Council has agreed to use the Piddlehinton site as a temporary transit site for Gypsies and Travellers, to help tackle the impact of unauthorised encampments in the county.

Opposite the Enterprise Park it will have space for 25 caravans with shared toilets and be managed by council’s Gypsy and Traveller liaison team.

Councillor Hilary Cox, the council’s cabinet member for environment, said she was aware of local concerns, but says the county council will work with Dorset Police to offer local residents and businesses reassurance. She added that it was unlikely that the site would be fully occupied.

The council will now seek temporary planning permission for the site for a period of five years. If approved it could be ready for the coming summer. The estimated cost of the project varies between £35,000 and £60,000 a year, depending on the level of security finally agreed on.

Piddle Valley district councillor Jaqui Cuff said that she has been told by some businesses at Enterprise Park that they would move elsewhere if planning permission was granted for the transit site. She also warned that there could be conflict with residents from the permanent Gypsy site in the village.
