Delay to Traveller bid in Grappenhall - Cheshire

From This Is Cheshire

TRAVELLERS could still be given permission to permanently settle in Grappenhall after councillors decided to further investigate a planning application.

Five families and 1o caravans will be allowed at the site at Grappenhall Lodge on Cartridge Lane if approved.

A utility block and additional space for parking would also be provided.

The site is currently unauthorised after temporary permission for two caravans and two mobile homes expired in October 2011.

But Travellers have continued to live there and they are now attempting to get approval for extra caravans.

Councillors on the development management committee said that a site visit will be needed before a decision can be made.

Clr Mike Biggin (Grappenhall and Thelwall - LD) spoke against the application when it was heard at the Town Hall on Thursday.

He said: “The breach of the original agreement, and now with the arrival of extra caravans, it iss clear the applicant doesn’t intend to comply with the restrictions.

“I’m not speaking anti-Traveller, but trying to support the officers.”

There have been 34 objections from neighbours, who cite building on the green belt, a loss of trees and over-development as concerns.

They also fear that more Travellers will continue to move to the site.

But supporters at the meeting claimed that there is not enough provision for Travellers in the town.

Warrington Borough Council has ‘failed’ in its duty to support such families, it was claimed.

A decision on the application will be made at the development and management committee’s next meeting on Thursday, January 24.
