Traveller Encampment - Oxfordshire

From Eynsham Online

On 18 July 2011 WODC's planning enforcement team served Travellers on the field beside the B4449 Eynsham bypass with an eviction order, mainly for contravention of planning policy by using green belt land for residential purposes. It came into force on 31 August and required all occupants to remove themselves and their vehicles within two months of that date and to remove all equipment & rubbish from the site.

In the meantime the Travellers made contact with officers asking for an extension until 31 March 2012 to allow them to prepare their vehicles and families for the move. Written and signed agreements were received from all the families confirming their intention to quit the land by that date.

Bearing in mind the apparent genuine commitment by the Travellers to comply with the enforcement notice, albeit 5 months beyond the compliance period, and the time frames and resources required to prepare for a prosecution, officers have taken the view that it is not in the public interest to proceed to prosecution.

Officers are aware that more vehicles have been brought in. However they believe this is preparatory to moving on; no more families are believed to be onsite.

They plan a further visit on Monday 23 January, to deliver confirmation letters reinforcing WODC's intention to take immediate enforcement action should the site not be cleared as agreed
