From Highland Radio
The Donegal Travellers Project has said it is deeply shocked, saddened and outraged by the comments made by Donegal Councillor Sean Mc Eniff.
The Fianna Fáil representative is opposed to the purchase of a house, by Donegal County Council, for social housing in Ballyshannon at a cost of 230-thousand euro for a Traveller family.
While insisting he is not racist, or a bigot Mr McEniff said that Travellers should be isolated and put to live together.
Hugh Friel, a representative of Donegal Travellers Project says Councillor McEniff’s comments have the potential to destroy their lives of the family in the locality as they go about their business or accessing services. schools, jobs or shops.
Cllr Mc Eniff is a Director of Donegal Local Development Company and a member of Donegal County Council.
Hugh Friel points out that these bodies are responsible for the implementation of the EU Peace Programme and the Local Community Development Programme with a remit for building positive relationships across communities, promoting equality, and addressing social inclusion and disadvantage.
Mr McEniff has been called on to consider his comments in the light of his role in the county.
The Donegal Travellers Project says the councillor should now apologise to the Traveller community and not repeat what they described as ‘these racist comments’
