Call for Travellers’ site after Rastrick and Brighouse open spaces taken over by caravans - Yorkshire

From the Huddersfield Daily Examiner

A GROUP of Travellers have caused outrage after moving on to a recreation ground in Rastrick and Brighouse.

The Travellers had only just left Rastrick behind when they moved onto the Lane Head fields in Brighouse yesterday.

One of the Travellers, who said he wouldn’t be named, told the Examiner they would be moving on later today.

“We’re going. I don’t know where but a bit further to Bradford I think,” the man said.

“We didn’t leave any rubbish there (in Rastrick) we get blamed but it wasn’t anyone I know.”

But a resident living near to the Rastrick site said the area around Bramston Recreation Ground was clear of rubbish prior to them arriving.

Mandy Turner said: “I walk my dog round there every day so I know it was fine before they came.

“I don’t object to their way of life but they can’t go leaving places in a tip and expecting someone else to clear up after them.

“Perhaps if there was a designated site this wouldn’t happen and the council could focus its resources on just one area.

“They’d then know they weren’t allowed on other sites and it would be easier to move them on from places like this.”

A spokesman for Calderdale Council said: “The council has again met with the Travellers since they moved to Lane Head Recreation Ground and is deciding on what further action to take.

“In the meantime, our Safer Cleaner Greener team has been working to clear the site on Bramston Recreation Ground, previously occupied by the Travellers.”
