Travellers leave Harlow site following court threat - Essex

From the Harlow Star

TRAVELLERS trespassing on private land near the Newhall housing development have moved on after being threatened with legal action.

Landowners Newhall Projects served a court notice to the group, who set up a camp of nine caravans on the playing field on Monday evening, after they ignored the developers request to vacate the land by 4pm yesterday (Wednesday).

According to Matthew Byatt, head of sales and marketing for Newhall Projects, the Travellers moved on around 1am this morning.

“After working closely with the police and the Essex Community Safety Team we are relieved the situation has now been resolved and pleasantly surprised by the minimal amount of damage done to the area,” he told the Star.

“We hope to get the site cleared as soon as possible and shall be reviewing the situation to see if anything can be done to stop this happening again in the future.”

Portfolio holder for youth and citizenship councillor Emma Toal added: “Since Tuesday the council has worked closely with the police and the landowners and met with the Travellers. I’m pleased that the Council was able to help in resolving this situation quickly.”
