A Big Public Debate? Gypsies, Roma and Irish Travellers in the media

From the Irish Traveller Movement In Britain

This report summarises the key issues raised at the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain (ITMB) seminar on Gypsies, Roma and Irish Travellers in the media. The seminar was kindly hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Gypsies, Roma and Travellers and chaired by Andrew George MP. The ITMB organised the seminar to stimulate debate and raise awareness of how these groups are treated in the media. We also hope the seminar will support the evidence presented in the ITMB submission to the Leveson Inquiry examining the culture, practices and ethics of the press.

The event was attended by a wide range of individuals and organisations, including members of the Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller communities, Parliamentarians, the Society of Editors, Press Complaints Commission, Channel 4, National Union of Journalists and Ofcom. It is hoped that the seminar will act as the catalyst for further debate and action on this issue.
