Travellers moved on from Normanton sports fields -

From the Wakefield Express

TRAVELLERS set up camp on cricket pitches in Normanton.

Around 10 caravans were pitched on the playing fields behind the derelict Bronte sports and social club, off Snydale Road.

They arrived on Tuesday night, but were moved on yesterday morning.

Sgt Peter Roberts, of Normanton neighbourhood police team, worked with Wakefield Council’s Gypsy liaison officer to move them on.

Sgt Roberts said: “There were around 10 caravans which had set up on the cricket pitches on the sports field.

“We went down and spoke with them and told them they could not stay there for any period of time as it is for the public.

“We have to take a reasonable approach and they said they would leave by Wednesday evening.

“We understand there were children climbing on the Bronte pub and concerns from residents.

“We put extra police patrols in the area to help reassure the public.”
