From AboutMyArea
Travellers who arrived at Zetland Field in Farlington yesterday evening have been given 24 hours to leave.
The notice was given at 7pm last night so the Travellers have until 7pm tonight to pack up.
If the Travellers do not leave then a court order may be used. However, the council must ensure that they follow set procedures to obtain the necessary authority from the Court. They must ensure that there are no health or welfare issues and make enquiries about the children's education. At all times, the council must fully comply with the Human Rights Act 1998.
On Twitter, mikey1963 said, "If they didn't break laws and kept where they go clean, others might accept them. Always everyone else's problem not theirs."
Alison Sudbury's daughter often visits Zetland Park and said, "My daughter often goes over there with her friends. I have told her to stay away. How dare they go on land where children play."
Other comments from the AboutMyArea Portsmouth Facebook include:
Adam Broomfield Strawn: "I have no problem with Travellers IF they leave the area as they find it IE: TIDY. Travellers complain that they all get a hard time but often (but I'd like to believe not always) leave the area covered in rubbish etc which costs the local councils £000's to clear up. I wouldn't come and dump a load of rubbish on your (caravan) doorstep so don't do it on mine. Your reputation is built on your actions."
Louise Austin: "If they had a designated site, I'm pretty sure they would be happy to use it. There are plenty of places that could be used but then people complain about the location of the sites so where are the Travellers meant to go except on parks etc?"
Matt Sparks: "Shocking behaviour really. Kids play there. I grew up playing in that park. Have they no shame? They should be removed by force.
