Gypsies moved on after police issue order - Hampshire

From Get Hampshire

POLICE have successfully ousted a group of Gypsies from a site in Aldershot after giving them a warning to move on.

Hampshire Police employed Section 61 powers to remove a Traveller encampment that had formed at the Brook Trading Estate, off Field Way.

Officers from Hart and Rushmoor used the powers after the group arrived on April 29. They had moved from Ivy Fields Industrial Estate, in Aldershot.

Police responded following reports from members of the public about nuisance behaviour, and that rubbish and human waste had been left at both sites.

The Section 61 notice, ordering them to leave, was served on the group by Inspector Justin Browne, the same day the Travellers had arrived. They were given until 1pm the following day, April 30, to leave and the Gypsies obeyed.

District Commander Chief Inspector Darren Barrett said: “In using these powers Hampshire Constabulary will always ensure we balance the needs and rights of all our communities with actions that are proportionate, lawful and necessary.

“I hope this swift action to move the Travellers on from locations that were unsuitable will convey to all sections of the community that a robust approach will be taken against encampments within legal parameters.

"We will continue to work closely with partner agencies and private landowners to manage unauthorised encampments and identify repeat locations where there has been criminality or disorder in order to target harden these sites.”
