Travellers say they are not bringing caravans to Rhostyllen - Wrexham

TRAVELLERS embroiled in a row over access to land have rubbished claims they are trying to move caravans onto the site.

Police were called to Rhostyllen after a group of Travellers moved a barrier to gain access to a field off the B5605 near the former Little Chef restaurant.

Traveller Michael Berry, 56, of Bryn Offa, claimed he moved the large block bollard in order to take a bale of hay to his horses.

He and others have now put up a number of protest signs at the roadside, including a banner proclaiming “We Want Justice For Travellers. The Council And Police Are Prejudiced”.

They are also maintaining a vigil at the field to ensure they can continue to get in and out of the gateway.

Mr Berry does not own the field and refused to tell the Leader who the owner is, but said he has been keeping horses at the site for years.

He said: “There are rumours locally that we are trying to get caravans on the site which is totally ridiculous. I just want to feed the horses, it is as simple as that.

“I feel we are not being treated in a fair manner.”

North Wales Police spokesman Michael McGivern said: “We were called on Saturday afternoon.

“There was a report of a complaint that a council-installed barrier was being removed by several people near to the Croesfoel roundabout.

“The council was informed, there was no damage.”
