Proposal to double Cheslyn Hay Gypsy site is revealed - Staffordshire

Plans to double the size of a Gypsy site on green belt land in Cheslyn Hay to make room for more caravans are being considered by councillors.

The application to extend The Pony Paddock could see a further eight caravans set up, four of which would be static homes.

The Hospital Lane site currently has eight caravans on six pitches, but applicants Fred and Joanne Rodgers, who moved in during 2005, said they need added space to accommodate their growing family.

Officers at South Staffordshire District Council have recommended the plans are given the go-ahead at a planning meeting on Tuesday with restrictions. Two residents have lodged objections to the request.

If given the green light, development must take place within three years and the site can only be occupied by the family and 10 others.

Councillor Mike Boyle, member of South Staffordshire District Council and Cheslyn Hay Parish Council, said he was undecided.

He said: “The family which are there at the moment have been great neighbours, but I fear if this was given the go-ahead it could expand and expand.

“The problem is, it causes resentment when we allow Travellers to stay on a green belt site when other people wouldn’t be able to build on it.”
