Travellers Evicted From Illegal Camp In Emsworth - Sussex

From Spirit FM

Officials in West Sussex are being warned to secure open spaces against the arrival Travellers.

It comes as an illegal campsite is broken up near Emsworth.

10 caravans arrived on Friday 15 February, angering locals and the local authorities.

Working in conjunction with Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Police, Havant Borough Council obtained a court order for the lay-by off the A259 on Wednesday 20 February.

Bob Coleman from the authority admitted to Spirit FM they couldn't rule out trouble once the bailiffs arrived on Thursday afternoon:

"We are in the process of giving the 'heads up' to neighbouring authorities that they will be on the move. I don't think it's a matter of passing the problem on to other areas.

"I think what we can do is work with our colleagues to make sure that any vulnerable areas are secured.

"Friday the 15th, the Travellers occupied the site, but in less than a week we've managed to get a court order to remove them, so we've been pretty effective at dealing with it."
