From the Mid Sussex Times
TRAVELLERS have set up an illegal camp on the recreation ground at Clayton.
Earlier this month and through part of August they were also seen in Cuckfield, Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint.
Travellers have parked on the football pitch at Clayton and their caravans are visible from the Jack and Jill windmills at the top of the Downs.
Burgess Hill councillor, Anne Jones, has called for the law to be changed to move Travellers on more quickly.
She said: “We get squeezed on council tax and have to spend a lot of money getting Travellers moved on. They are costing us a fortune.”
Hikers who walked across the recreation ground yesterday on their way to the Jack and Jill windmills and the South Downs Way reported seeing bottles and paper left on the pitch.
There will be a special feature on Travellers on pages 6 and 7 of this week’s Mid Sussex Times, which is out on Thursday, September 13.
