From the Runcorn and Widnes Times
WIDNES and Runcorn are being scoured for 28-32 extra pitches for Traveller and Gypsy camping plots.
Halton Borough Council’s executive board agreed last Thursday to bid for a share of £12.1m Homes And Communities Agency (HCA) cash to fund upgrades to the area’s provision and to find room for new developments.
The borough currently has 40 pitches but the authority must find the extra pitches as required by Government policy.
A Gypsy and Traveller accommodation assessment could cost up to £20,000 but the figure would be slashed to about £7,000 if the four local authorities in Cheshire complete one together.
The most likely site to take the extra pitches is at Warrington Road in Runcorn, which is already home to a transit site.
However, Halton Council is also considering 0.5 acres of land next to a railway off Picow Farm Road near Weston Point Expressway Junction.
Six other sites have been dropped as options.
They include land at Johnsons Lane in WidnesClifton Road, Astmoor, Windmill Avenue and next to Cavendish School in Runcorn.
The council’s executive board resolved to carry out a Gypsy and Traveller accommodation assessment, to complete a feasibility study, to bid for some HCA cash and to finalise sites for extra pitches.
