Planning application for 10 more caravans at Smithy Fen Travellers' site in Cottenham rejected - Cambridgeshire

Travellers have been refused permission for up to 10 more caravans at Smithy Fen in Cottenham.
The needs of the Wall family did not outweigh the harm caused to the landscape by the five plots in Pine Lane, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee ruled today.
Members voted unanimously to overturn a recommendation from officers that the “predominantly retrospective” application should be approved on the grounds that the Travellers had nowhere else to go and that children attending local schools needed stability.

A park protection group has raised concerns after a traveller community moved onto Manor Road Park at the weekend.
Members of Friends of Manor Park– the group behind refurbishments to the park completed in March– has reported that seven caravans on Sunday morninghad become thirteen by Monday.
A Traveller community previously moved onto Manor Road Park last year and remained for two weeks until being forced to move.

Travellers are set to be moved on from the latest Brighton landmark after police intervention today (Wednesday July 2).
A group of about 40 vehicles were ordered to leave Withdean Park yesterday after a section 61 notice was served on the unauthorised encampment.
After some of the group were moved off Patcham Peace Gardens, off London Road, about 30 trailers are currently camped on Waterhall playing fields in Waterhall Road.

Newport Gypsy transit camp plan faces the axe

A GYPSY site mooted for the west of Newport that came under fire from local businesses and Welsh government officials is set to be dropped from Newport’s local development plan (LDP).
Following a public examination by the planning inspector Alwyn Nixon, the city’s blueprint for the next two years is out to consultation yet again – this time over a list of proposed changes to the plan.
A proposed transit site for Gypsy and Travellers at Celtic Way – which the Welsh Government said it would not hand over to the council – is likely to be dropped from the LDP and replaced with the contingency site proposed at Ringland Allotments.

Traveller site pitches could cost £125,000 - Somerset

Pitches at a new camp site for Travellers in Weston-super-Mare are expected to cost a minimum of £125,000 each to build – the same price that one five-bedroom house in the town is currently fetching.
North Somerset Council is working with Elim Housing Association to create the new 24-pitch site on land at the Old Junction Yard off Winterstoke Road.
Government funding of £2.16 million has been secured from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and £600,000 has been earmarked by North Somerset Council.
A further undisclosed sum is being invested by Elim Housing and while the final cost of the new camp has yet to be confirmed. It is thought that the overall cost could exceed £3 million.

French Travellers pitch up in Dundee

A group of caravans from France has pitched up on community parkland in Dundee.
At least 15 Traveller caravans turned up at the grassy area outside the West End Community and Sports Hub on Riverside Drive on Sunday.
When approached by the Evening Telegraph, a man claimed the group were from Strasbourg, which is the capital of the Alsace region in eastern France.

Travellers remain on land off Weelsby Road in Grimsby despite being ordered to leave by council - Lincolnshire

A group of travellers are still camped on land off Weelsby Road in Grimsby.
Six caravans and a number of other vehicles have moved to the Barrett’s Recreational Ground off Park Avenue.
Councillor Chris Shaw, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "Officers from the council and Humberside Police visited the site on Monday and have advised the group that they face legal action if they fail to leave.
"The law allows the council and the police to move people on when they set up camp on land without permission, regardless of who they are.

Travellers told to leave Withdean Park - Sussex

TRAVELLERS were told to leave a city park last night.
A group arrived at the council-owned Withdean Park in Brighton on Friday and there were 39 vehicles at the site yesterday morning.
A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said officials had visited the site with police.
Yesterday the council applied to the County Court for a possession order to enable an eviction to be carried out. Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, of Sussex Police, tweeted: “I have authorised use of Police powers to require travellers...in #Withdean Park to leave by 10am tomorrow”.
