Fresh proposals for Gypsy camp in Ewloe - Flintshire

CAMPAIGNERS are vowing to fight a third attempt to create a Gypsy site in their village.

Plans to build the permanent Traveller camp off Magazine Lane in Ewloe were rejected by Flintshire County Council last January.

And a Welsh Government inspector then dismissed applicant Martin Rooney’s appeal after a three-day public inquiry in July.

His report listed ‘serious concerns’ over the living conditions on the proposed site and said a suitable noise assessment had not been carried out.

But now amended plans have been submitted to the council – and include a 13ft barrier.

In a statement Ewloe Green Action Group, formed in 2010 to fight the initial proposals, said: “Such a barrier will create an even greater intrusion to the open countryside between the villages of Ewloe and Northop Hall.

“These issues and others of concern will be cited in objection letters submitted to Flintshire County Council, and we trust that the latest application is also rejected.

“The stance of Ewloe Green Action Group remains the same for this latest application – this is inappropriate development in an area designated as green barrier.”

Residents said from the start the plans were out of keeping with the area and also raised concerns about traffic, drainage and sewage.

Mr Rooney’s proposals include five pitches for Gypsy caravans and utility buildings and spaces for touring mobile homes.

When his plans first came to light in summer 2010 a public meeting was held at Ewloe Social Club, and more than 200 people opposing the development turned out.

Councillors Alison Halford and Dave Mackie, who represent Ewloe on the county council, have reiterated their support for the campaigners.

Green Planning Solutions, which represents Mr Rooney, declined to comment when contacted by the Chronicle this week.
