PORTHTOWAN Hearing starts - Cornwall

From the West Briton

A PLANNING hearing opened yesterday to consider an appeal against Cornwall Council's decision not to allow a Gypsy family to settle on land on the edge of Porthtowan.

Gary Emmins applied for a change of use of land at Pirates, Chapel Hill, to site a log cabin and touring caravan, and to retain a portable building.

It was refused permission in May last year.

At the opening, planning inspector Gerry Hillington outlined the main issues as he saw them, including Mr Emmins' Gypsy status, the sustainability of the site, highway safety, and Cornwall Council's overall provision of alternative Gypsy sites, or lack of it.
