COUNCIL contractors will enter private land next week to remove asbestos, then deliver the bill to the landowners. The deadly substance will be removed from parts of the former Dale Farm Traveller site next week.
Council leader Tony Ball said the action was necessary because abatement notices had been ignored.
Roof sheets containing asbestos were damaged during a fire last year, which destroyed an industrial unit.
A council contractor will clear asbestos debris from the burnt out unit from Monday. Works at the site will also include preventing a cesspool overflow from polluting a nearby ditch.
A council spokesman said temporary access to the site would have to be set up for plant equipment. The spokesman added that representatives of the site's former Traveller community had been informed of the works. The council insisted that the works were necessary to minimise public health risks.
Cllr Ball said: “The council issued formal notices and reminders last year, however, these have been ignored.
“The council now has no choice but to act and do this work now to address the health issues and then seek to recover the costs from landowners concerned.”
