Travellers descended on Blues’ car park - Doncaster

From the Derbyshire Times

POLICE helped escort a convoy of Travellers and their caravans from Chesterfield FC’s B2Net Stadium after they parked up at the club car park today, Wednesday, March 21, without permission.

The French speaking Travellers told how they had been looking for somewhere to park to have a break and something to eat as they were travelling to Scotland.

Derbyshire Constabulary followed the Travellers on to the Blues’ car park, on Sheffield Road, at Whittington Moor, about 2pm, before they were re-directed from the stadium and towards the M1 motorway about half-an-hour later.

Chesterfield FC Chairman Barrie Hubbard wished the Travellers “au revoir” from the main entrance as they drove away waving and smiling.

He said: “When I saw the caravans coming on to our car park I thought we were hosting some kind of conference.

“But then the police came very quickly and the Travellers agreed to go quietly and were escorted from our car park.”

Two people were restrained by police for a breach of the peace during the incident but were later released as the Travellers agreed to leave with about 12 vehicles and caravans.
