The bill to repair pitches at a football club near Oswestry which were occupied by Travellers could be more than £5,000, officials said today.
About 35 families moved onto Oswestry Boys and Girls Club pitches at Park Hall for about a week.
They arrived on June 25 and left on Sunday after being served notice by bailiffs. But club bosses said they left behind rubbish and churned up the ground. Club chairman Neil Jones has been looking at quotes to find out how much it would cost to repair the damage and said he had been quoted £5,100, after tax, to repair the seven damaged pitches.
“We are talking about £4,120 plus VAT, which is £5,100, and that is just to repair the pitches, not the repairs to surrounding areas,” he said.
He is now in talks with insurers and other companies to see how the costs will be paid.
Oswestry councillor Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, has offered the authority’s help to clear rubbish from the pitches.
He said: “The football club has been faced with a huge job clearing rubbish and mess from the site and getting the pitches back ready for use again. I was really keen for the council to do whatever we could to help.
“We’ve therefore asked our contractor, Ringway, to help clean-up the site and they’re currently talking to the club to arrange the best time to do this.”
Mr Jones said he did not know when the clear up and repairs would take place as he was still working out costs.
The Travellers arrived at the Park Hall pitches when they found the site of their Christian Travellers’ event at Halston Hall, near Whittington, waterlogged.
Mr Jones said the club would still hold its five-a-side festival.
